At Last.... Wheatear

At long last, finally got a Wheatear on the patch, after searching almost daily for the last three weeks ! On the loch, the Duck flock consisted of 22 Wigeon, 14 Tufted Duck, 2 Goldeneye, 6 Teal, 2 Pintail and a year-tick - Gadwall.

PWC 2014

Day one of the 2014 Patchwork Challenge, ended up with 31 species and 41 points - not too bad for one and a half square kilometres in Shetland in mid winter.

Swell

A quick look around the patch after yesterdays storm, not a great deal of damage - a dry stone wall washed away and a bit of the cliff has fell off. Out on the headland 31 Snow Buntings were new in and the Golden Plover flock has dwindled to one, elsewhere there were 55 Wigeon and a single Lapwing.

Frozen.

With the patch now completely frozen, a 2 hour walk produced pretty slim pickings. The good thing is that Scatness has a couple of freshwater springs, that remain flowing, even in pretty harsh weather, a walk along them today produced a Water Rail and a Jack Snipe in one and a Moorhen in the other. Around the rest of the patch and everything seemed to be on the seaweed covered beaches - a total of 157 Snipe (most of them on Moast Beach), 2 Golden Plovers and 30 Wigeon. The Robin and Chaffinch remain in the garden and a Turnstone has now joined the Starlings in the garden.

Dross.

South-easterly winds for a couple of days have produced absolutely nothing at Scatness, and the usual summer dross remains. 79 Wheatears on the 9th was a bit unusual and a couple of returning Wigeon on the 8th is noteworthy (I suppose). A Magpie in the moth trap on the 5th was my first August record.
