1066 - Back to the old patch

Have been back south for the last week, and while I was there I visited the old patch a couple of times. Moore NR seems to have become even more popular with visitors than it was when I left in 2002 and even more birdless - coincidence? Anyway the highlights were a couple of Yellow-legged Gulls on Birchwood Pool, a leucistic Black-headed Gull on Pumphouse Pool, Kingfishers around the Eastern Reedbed and Lesser Spotted Woodpecker singing in Lapwing Lane Alder Woods. And the post title? This is my 1066th post - and nothing to do with any battles on the south coast.

'Pecker

Great Spotted Woodpecker in the bag already ! It did take a while though, first seen by JW in his garden at about 9 am, it then led me a merry dance around Scatness in the pissing rain for nearly two hours, until I finally relocated it on some fence posts.

Confusion in the Garden

Back home (last Sunday) and back on the true patch of Scatness, a good walk around the area and the only rewards were a Stock Dove at Old Scatness, 6 Wheatears and a Merlin. Most of the day was spent in the garden where, excluding Sparrows and Starlings, there were just 4 birds - a Lesser Whitethroat, a Great Spotted Woodpecker, a Yellow-browed Warbler and a Blyth's Reed Warbler !!! I had the Blyth's Reed down as a Marsh, due to the pale tips to the primaries and the fact that the bird kept on raising it's crown feathers - a la Marsh, however as soon as Suave Harv saw the photos he suggested Blyth's Reed.

Peckers

Spent two days around Wolski Forest looking mainly for woodpeckers, a difficult but not impossible task in July, I hadn't banked on the evil Polish mozzies though ! So after two days I had to give up before I ran out of blood ! I did manage to get several of Grey-headed, Middle Spotted and Great Spotted, and heard a few Greens and one Black. As well as the Woodpeckers there were lots of Spotted Flycatchers, Nuthatches and Treecreepers, 4 Hawfinch, 2 Wood Warblers and a Red-backed Shrike.
