Odd Stuff

A bit of an easterly overnight and a strange set of migrants on the patch, especially considering the date - Grey Wagtail, Robin and Wood Pigeon! Elsewhere on the patch 9 Long-tailed Ducks and 2 Shoveler on the Loch and a Chiffchaff in the garden. A single Marbled Coronet was in the moth trap.

Winding Down

Spring is not far off coming to an end, with only a week or so to go. And so it is on the patch, with only 1 Reed Warbler, 1 Chiffchaff, 2 Shoveler, 5 Swallow and 2 Golden Plover being seen today. Put the moth trap out last night for the first time this year - 2 Angle Shades, 2 Netted Pugs and a Shears.

March

Apart from a fly-through Hen Harrier on the 31st, most of March was pretty much a waste of time. The usual fare managed to sneak in though with Song Thrush on the 11th, Chaffinch on the 12th, Goldcrest on the 18th, Pied Wagtail on the 26th,Moorhen, Shelduck and Bar-tailed Godwit on the 28th and a Siskin on the 31st. Despite there being Stonechats on areas outside the patch this month, I still managed not to find one!

Monster

All quiet on the patch, but wader numbers are building up again with 80+ Sanderlings, 200+ Dunlin and 3 Knot. But the highlight of the day was a Convolvulus Hawkmoth in the trap this morning - what a monster.

More Migrants

Around the patch today were - 1 Pied Flycatcher, 7 Willow Warblers, 1 Garden Warbler, 1 Lesser Whitethroat, 1 Common Whitethroat, 1 Swift and a Knot. There was probably more, but it was really foggy for most of the day. A new moth for the garden trapped last night - Lesser Broad-bordered Yellow Underwing.

Terns and a first

Sandwich Tern on the patch today, and a first for Shetland in the form of a Flame Carpet in the garden - it did jump from the trap, but I did manage to get a photo of it before it flew from the garden.

Sikkim Permit

Spent all day in Darjeeling, 4 hours of it getting my Sikkim Permit. Things are never straightforward in India, first of all you go to the Magistrate's Office to get a form, this then has to be filled in and taken to the Foreigner Registration Office (on the other side of town!) to be stamped and signed, then you take the form back to the Magistrate's Office where they will issue your permit!!!
