The End

It looks like the autumn is over now (always a sign that there's bugger all on the patch when Purple Sand photos start appearing), around the patch today were 2 Robins, 2 Whooper Swans and 78 Snow Buntings (in 3 flocks heading north).

Some Stuff from Friday

Redshank in the low evening sun. Red-breasted Megansers (and local pub) Purple Sandpiper - still over 100 on the patch.

Grelag Geese - 10 or so present all winter, now 30+ on the patch.

Dunnock - a most welcome year-tick, it's not foggy by the way, my kitchen window was covered in sea salt !

The Meaning of Life, the Universe and Everything....

...or 42 - that's what the patch year-list has now crept up to. With Toab, Quendale, Garth's Ness and Fitful all getting snow today, Scatness remained pretty much snow free until after dark. This worked out quite well for the year-list, with the field in front of the house being pretty busy all day, with 27 Fieldfare, 4 Golden Plover, 20 Lapwing, a Dunlin, 10 Teal, a Merlin and a Black-tailed Godwit (with one and a half legs!)

Happy House.

Another futile walk around the patch, on the strength of a Red-backed Shrike at Virkie and a Marsh Warbler on Whalsay, there was maybe a chance of getting something half decent - no way Pedro - 2 House Martins and 5 Sanderling was about it ! Seems that Wrens are having a good year, with at least 3 broods now wandering around Scatness (though numbers may decline rapidly if they discover my moth trap !)

It's all over now, baby blue.

It looks like it's all over for this spring, a couple of hours on the patch and nothing ! Looks like it's going to be a couple of months relying on the moth trap to produce something good, and as the garden has already had 2 first for Shetland (Reed Dagger and Dark Spectacle) and several seconds and thirds, it may just keep some kind of interest going until the autumn (which is only about 10 weeks away !). Until then I think I'll just enjoy the good weather, as long as it lasts, and get a few shots of common stuff at Scatness.

Ruff.

A walk around Scatness in the morning, before the wind got up (forecast strong SE with rain, afternoon and overnight) - 16 Dunlin, mostly on the bathing pool and the Loch, 1 Black-tailed Godwit, 2 Greenshank (flying towards Grutness), 8 Knot, 3 Sanderling and a Ruff. 45+ Wheatears around the headland.

The Bathing Pool.

A good few hours spent on the banks of the bathing pool at Scatness, 3 splendid summer plumaged Knot (yesterdays flock seems to have moved on), 6 Dunlin and a couple of Turnstone. Lots of Oystercatchers and Arctic Terns still using the pool.
