Lights, Camera... Action.

Last night the Aurora returned and for the first time in a good while, the skies were clear. Starting at about half seven it carried on until around midnight and even 'Steve' put in an appearance. All photos taken from the garden.

December Highlights

The only highlights on the patch for December was a Pink-footed Goose seen a couple of times with the Greylags and the Northern Lights showed a couple of times too.

After the storm 2

Another storm yesterday, but the patch stayed pretty much the same - 7 Wheatear, 2 Blackcap, 1 Grey Plover, 1 Grey Heron and 52 Pink-footed Geese. A female Chaffinch was new in.

On with the show

Last night's Aurora was pretty spectacular for a while, it reached it's peak between 9mp and 10pm before fizzling out to nearly nothing at around midnight. I think it would have been even brighter if not for such a bright moon last night.
All the following photos were taken from the garden.

Lights Out

Last night's aurora started pretty poorly at about 9pm, I was just going to give up with but, instead stuck it out until 1am, and it did get better and better before just fizzling out.

Small Change

A little bit of change on the patch, namely Oystercatchers are now up to 40+ and Skylarks are now in double figures, still only 2-3 Meadow Pipits though. On the Loch today there was a 1w Glaucous Gull and a Whooper Swan which was joined by a second bird later in the day. In West Voe the Scoter flock is still there, Long-tailed Ducks have increased to around 250, also in the Voe were 36 Goldeneye, 5 Red-breasted Mergansers and 6 Great Northern Divers.

And a moody looking Fitful - hard to believe that both pictures were taken just a few hours apart

Noticed this Points per Bird table on BirdGuides - not bad for a tiny patch in winter.

Also on BirdGuides was this epic error -
