The Fall

From the 19/4 until the end of April, there was a bit of a fall on Shetland, and the patch did quite well out of it (for a change !). Highlights included Black Redstart and Great Grey Shrike in the garden on the 20th, 3 Ring Ouzels, a Reed Bunting, 2 Wood Pigeons and 57 Robins on the 21st, White-tailed Eagle over on the 29th and a Sedge Warbler on the 30th. Plus Goldcrests and Dunnocks most days, a Sparrowhawk on the 22nd and 2 Iceland Gulls on the 19th - a pretty good 10 day spell.

Back Home into Chaos.

Left Fair Isle at 6am on the Good Shepherd, getting into Lerwick at 10.20 - a lot smoother than yesterday's trip with close views of Seabirds on the way. Got back to Sumburgh at about 11.30, jamming straight into the White-tailed Eagle, soaring high over Fitful Head and eventually disappearing into the clouds. The 2 Black Duck were on the Loch at Scatness (patch tick) and eventually made it onto the House List in the afternoon (164), the day ended with an adult summer Franklin's Gull near Sullom Voe (found by the Assassin) loosely associating with the Black-headed Gull colony before flying off into the hills. All in all - quite a hectic 2 days !

White-tailed Eagle.

Spent the morning at Scatness - 2 Swallows, 9 Wheatear, 16 Tufties and 7 Wigeon - then got some news of White-tailed Eagle flying North from Fair Isle, after about 40 minutes, picked the bird up flying low over the sea - did a mad dash to the Garden, but managed to miss it somehow. It turns out that the bird is wing-tagged and radio-tagged and is from a re-introduction program in Tayside - therefore, about as 'countable' as domestic Chicken !
Photos of this bird on North Ronaldsay yesterday can be seen here - http://northronbirdobs.blogspot.com/2009/04/11th-april.html
