Another winter storm hits Shetland, a northerly this time and it doesn't have a name (the met office don't seem to bother naming them if they don't affect London in any way). I managed to get as far as Moast Beach on the patch before the snow showers started, not a great deal on Moast but the Gannets and Kittiwakes were coming in pretty close.
The 2017 Patchwork Challenge begins, a few bits and bobs around the patch - 1w Glauc and ad Iceland Gull on the Loch, 1 Skylark, 5 Meadow Pipits and 3 Redwings in the Neep field, Gannets and Kittiwakes in Quendale Bay, 2 'fly-through' Whooper Swans and 2 Sanderling, 30 Ringed Plover and 4 Red-breasted Mergansers in West Voe. 3 hours birding and 41 species.
A stunning day on Shetland, nothing ne bird wise though, but it was a good excuse to be out with the camera after filling my lens up with water whilst seawatching a couple of days ago.
The patch seems completely devoid of birds, though this could have something to do with the fact that it's Sunday and everybody seemed to be walking their dogs, or visiting prehistoric ruins. Could only manage 1 Black-tailed Godwit, 1 Wheatear and 1 Wigeon on the circuit, the day was partially salvaged by 42 Pink-footed Geese at the back of the Loch.
Out on the patch today, with the usual fare still kicking about - 2 2w Iceland Gulls, a 2w Glauc and the 2 Scaup, a bit of a surprise was a Woodcock flushed off Moast Beach, which promptly flew out to sea.
A few more patch year-ticks added this week - Ringed Plover, Kittiwake and Short-eared Owl, the weather has been shite with gales and rain, so I might go into hibernation until April ! Hooded Crow. Kittiwake.
....for Little Gulls. With storm force westerlies hitting the patch, attempted to go for a sea-watch, until I saw this happening at the end of the road -
Sea-watching - bad idea, bay-watching, good idea, especially with a rather tame Little Gull feeding in the surf -
Little Gull.
Elsewhere around the patch - 2 Waxwings in the garden, 40+ Fieldfare and 20+ Redwing kicking about, and now 4 Scaup on the Loch.
Waxwing.
Redwing.
Even Kittiwakes were taking shelter behind stone walls !
