Snow

Quite a large amount of snow dumped on the patch over the last couple of days, but there has been very little change bird wise - Fieldfares increased from about 30 to 120+, Greylags went up to around 180 and the Ducks have been frozen off the Loch.

Goldfinch and Whacky Gull

On the patch today - 1 Goldfinch, 10 Redwing, 1 Chiffchaff, 3 Robins, 2 1w Glaucous Gulls and a crazy looking Iceland type that looked like neither an Iceland or a Kumlien's!

Another year tick

I thought the patch might have another year tick in it before the autumn was through, and it did - a Slavonian Grebe in West Voe. Still a few migrants around the patch, surprising really after the westerly gales of the last few days - 2 Blackcaps, 2 Robins and a Chiffchaff still kicking about and 3 Pink-footed Geese in front of the house.

What a carry on

Over to Bressay for the Black-faced Bunting at Gunnista, and I've never seen a bird that was so flighty, I only managed to see it on the deck twice in 5 hours, once on a fence near a garden for about 2 seconds and again on a dung heap for about 3 seconds, though I did get some pretty good flight views, probably about 20 in all (see map below). A few other birds around - Little Bunting in the crop, Redstart that seemed to turn up pretty well everywhere the BFB was, and a Blackcap and a Robin around the house. 2 Otters were down at the shore.

No change

Back out on the patch after a fortnight, and virtually no change apart from some snow! The Velvet Scoter and 5 Common Scoters are still in West Voe with the Long-tailed Ducks and the Robin is still around Colonial Place.

Another Year-tick at Long Last

20 days since the last year-tick (Chaffinch) and a most welcome Goldcrest turns up in the garden. Some more signs of Spring on the patch - Skylarks singing, 3 pairs of Ringed Plovers on territory and about 40 Meadow Pipits heading north. Elsewhere the Robin remains in the garden (present from January), 4 Pintail and a Grey Heron on Loch of Gards and the 8 Barnacle Geese in with the Greylags. And finally, this evening's sunset ended in a green flash.
